A five-year-old boy named Fareed Amir tragically lost his life when a family friend's electric car allegedly accelerated unexpectedly. The incident occurred in November 2022 near London Bridge as Fareed walked home from school. The driver, Ashenafei Demisse, contends that his parked Volkswagen ID.4 moved forward on its own while he was inside.
The car's sudden acceleration resulted in Fareed's fatal head injuries and left Demisse's 12-year-old son with two broken legs. Police investigations found no mechanical faults with the 2021 model electric vehicle. Prosecutors argue that Demisse inadvertently pressed the accelerator, causing the car to speed forward and collide with the children.
Fareed's mother desperately carried him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead due to multiple traumatic injuries. Demisse faces charges of causing death and serious injury by careless driving. His defense insists the electric car moved autonomously, a claim central to the ongoing court proceedings. A JustGiving page remembers Fareed as a happy boy, deeply missed by his school and loved ones.
