Birmingham Garden Offers Solace for Road Collision Families

A new memorial garden has been established in Birmingham's Pype Hayes Park, offering a place of support for families who have lost loved ones or suffered injuries in road collisions.

Community interest company Road to Change, in collaboration with Birmingham Children's Trust, developed the serene space. Notably, young individuals with driving-related offences contributed to its construction, providing them with an opportunity for reflection on the repercussions of their actions.

Earl Facey of the Youth Justice Service observed that working on the garden prompted young offenders to pause and consider their behaviour. He highlighted the project as a valuable chance for meaningful reparation and personal growth, with ongoing discussions about future ambitions and necessary support.

The garden features a wall dedicated to victims' names and mosaic art created by the youth. Sarah Downer from the service remarked on the poignant realization for the young participants upon understanding the scale of loss attributed to car crime.

Lucy Harrison, whose brother was killed in a collision, described the garden as a remarkable and powerful achievement. She emphasized its role in uniting families, professionals, and legal experts with a shared purpose to drive change and create a special place for remembrance.

Diane Cash, who lost her partner in a road incident, found the garden to be an idyllic and peaceful spot. She expressed that it will serve as a place to cherish good memories and connect with others who understand her grief, in a non-judgmental environment.
