The number of bird-hit incidents at Indian airports has seen a substantial increase, with 1,782 occurrences reported last year. This marks a rise from the 1,278 incidents recorded in 2024. The government shared this data, highlighting that these events can cause significant damage to aircraft.
Over the last five years, the cumulative number of bird-hit incidents across the country has reached 6,337. The figures for previous years were 1,371 in 2023, 1,131 in 2022, and 775 in 2021. Licensed airport operators are mandated to develop Wildlife Hazard Management Plans to tackle potential wildlife threats.
Airports are actively working to manage these risks. This includes the formation of Airfield Environment Management Committees (AEMC) at various airports. These committees are tasked with identifying the primary sources of wildlife hazards and implementing necessary control measures to ensure aviation safety.
