Bijnor Villages Submerged: Families Flee as Rivers Overflow
12 Jul
Summary
- Heavy rains in the Himalayas caused rivers to overflow, flooding four villages.
- Thousands of bighas of farmland were inundated, impacting local agriculture.
- Tragic incidents included a man swept away and two teenagers drowning.

Heavy rainfall in the Himalayan region has led to significant flooding in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district. The Malan River overflowed on Saturday, inundating the villages of Brahmpur, New Basti in Rawali, Bakarpur, and Muzaffarpur Kesho, alongside thousands of bighas of agricultural land.
Residents of Brahmpur and New Basti were compelled to evacuate their homes. Many sought refuge in temporary camps along the Ganga embankment. Although floodwaters receded from the Bijnor-Haridwar highway after a 24-hour disruption, the river's altered course worsened flooding in the Khadar region.
The recurring monsoon floods have left residents of New Basti displaced annually, with allegations of inadequate flood protection measures. The situation turned tragic with three reported deaths: a man swept away attempting to cross a causeway, and two teenagers who drowned in the Malan River. One of the teenagers' bodies was recovered on Saturday.
