Following devastating flash floods in Nepal, Bihar's Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department issued a public advisory on September 1, 2026. The warning cautions against consuming unfamiliar fish from floodwaters flowing into Bihar's rivers. Residents in districts like East and West Champaran, Gopalganj, Bagaha, and Saran have reported catching strange-looking, large fish, with some individuals falling ill after inadvertent consumption.
Fishermen have also reported seeing decomposing human and animal carcasses in the floodwaters. The advisory emphasizes that river fish may have come into contact with contaminants, posing a health risk. The state government urges people not to consume, buy, or sell these unusual fish, which some fishermen describe as weighing up to 45 kilos and resembling dolphins. Prompt medical attention is advised for anyone experiencing symptoms like vomiting or severe diarrhea after eating such fish.
