Firefighters have announced significant progress in combating two large wildfires affecting California's Big Sur region. As of Tuesday morning, the Timber Fire, which began on the night of August 8, has burned 25,380 acres and is now 27% contained. Crews are actively working in steep, challenging terrain to secure control lines and address remaining heat.
The Plaskett Fire, initiated on the morning of August 26, is the larger of the two, having consumed 29,862 acres. Containment has increased to 47%, though steep and rugged areas continue to pose operational difficulties for suppression efforts.
Evacuation orders and warnings are still in effect for areas affected by both fires. A critical 19-mile segment of Highway 1, stretching from Kirk Creek Campground to the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line, remains closed to the public. Attention is now turning to an anticipated heat advisory for the Bay Area and Central Coast, expected from Wednesday to Thursday, which could exacerbate conditions.
The causes of both the Timber and Plaskett fires are currently under investigation by authorities.
