26 Oct
Summary
- Over 1200 lift safety failures found in Bengaluru projects.
- Emergency systems and wiring posed high-risk issues.
- Operating certificates failed 60% of safety checks.
An audit of 12 new apartment projects in Bengaluru uncovered significant safety concerns regarding lifts. Across 3,543 checks, 1,283 failures were identified, with 347 classified as high priority, indicating potential risks to residents.
Failures were noted in emergency systems, including intercoms and public-address systems, with over half of these issues deemed high priority. Electrical compliance and earthing also presented problems, as did alignment and vibration issues, contributing to a rough ride for occupants.
Lighting within lift cars and shafts, along with electrical systems, recorded numerous findings. A significant concern was the operating certificates, which failed 60% of checks, highlighting potential gaps in regulatory compliance for lifts.
Residents are advised to demand checks for operating certificates, functioning rescue devices, intercoms, and proper maintenance records to ensure lift safety.
