29 Oct
Summary
- Several crashes occurred in B.C.'s Interior due to the season's first major snowfall.
- Two individuals remain in critical condition following a highway embankment crash.
- Officials urge drivers to prioritize safety and use proper winter tires.
The first major snowfall of the season has led to significant disruptions and injuries across British Columbia's Interior. Tuesday night saw a Ford Focus plunge down an embankment near Kamloops, resulting in five hospitalizations, two of whom are in critical condition. While impairment was ruled out as a factor in this specific incident, officials believe weather played a role in subsequent events.
Wednesday morning brought further chaos with Highway 97C near Merritt closed due to vehicle incidents, leading to three people being hospitalized. Additionally, Highway 16 west of Houston and Highway 97 north of Quesnel were also shut down because of vehicles blocking the roadway. RCMP and tire experts are reminding drivers to adjust their driving to the conditions and to ensure they are using appropriate winter-rated tires for safe travel.
