Summary
- Transport Canada detained a charter boat after a sister vessel sank.
- One person died and six are missing after the June 28 sinking.
- The detained vessel had safety deficiencies and improper registration.
Transport Canada has ordered the detention of an 11-metre boat operated by Top Vancouver Fishing Charter. This action comes after the company's nine-metre sister vessel, the Top Ocean, sank in the Strait of Georgia on June 28.
The sinking claimed one life and left six passengers missing and presumed drowned. The detained vessel, operated by Lihe Yin, faces allegations of safety deficiencies, including operating as a commercial passenger vessel while being a pleasure craft, and lacking proper registration and markings.
Investigators are examining the operation of the Top Ocean, which had 10 people aboard and no life-jackets were worn. The captain, Chen Ming, is among the missing. His family reported complaints about a broken side door that previously caused flooding.
Authorities continue to seek individuals with information regarding the vessel's previous voyages. Top Vancouver Fishing Charter has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation and detention.
