A tragic accident occurred Wednesday afternoon in central Bangladesh when a bus carrying approximately 50 passengers plunged into the River Padma. The incident happened in the Rajbari district as the bus was in the process of boarding a ferry. Authorities confirmed on Thursday morning that at least 18 people had died.
Many passengers managed to swim to safety following the plunge, but others became trapped. Rescue efforts were significantly challenged by strong river currents and overnight rains, which disrupted the operation. A rescue vessel was deployed late Wednesday to lift the bus from the water, and recovery work continued through the night.
Ten women and two children were among the confirmed fatalities. The bus was en route to the capital, Dhaka, from the southwestern district of Kushtia, with many people returning to work after the Islamic festival of Eid al-Fitr. It remains unclear if any individuals are still missing.
