Banbury Road Reopens Partially After Building Collapse
30 Oct
Summary
- A key route in Banbury has been partially reopened after a week-long closure.
- Two workers were hospitalized following a partial building and scaffolding collapse.
- The road's full reopening depends on site safety assessments by HSE.
A major route in Banbury, Cherwell Street (A4260), is scheduled for a partial reopening after being fully closed for more than a week. The closure followed a partial collapse of a building site and scaffolding on October 21, which sent two workers to the hospital. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating the incident.
Oxfordshire County Council announced the partial reopening over the weekend, allowing traffic on the carriageway furthest from the collapse to use it between George Street and Bridge Street. However, certain right turns, including access to Lower Cherwell Street and a petrol station, will be restricted.
This partial reopening is intended to alleviate the considerable traffic delays and congestion experienced by locals around the town centre, including at Banbury Cross. The HSE is currently reviewing a proposal from the site owner to make the area safe and remove materials.
Officials caution that the road may need to be fully closed again in the future to facilitate crane operations for securing the building site. A complete reopening will only occur after further assessments and information are received from Cherwell District Council and the HSE.
