A six-month-old infant endured a harrowing attack by a stray dog on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of a finger and severe facial injuries. The incident unfolded as the child slept in a stroller within the Junnar tehsil office premises, where his father was employed as a construction laborer. His mother was nearby, washing clothes, when the dog suddenly attacked.
The child's left middle finger was severed, his left index finger was gravely wounded, and he sustained deep lacerations to his face, cheek, and chin. Residents rushed to the child's aid, scaring away the animal.
Following initial treatment at a Junnar government hospital, the infant was transferred to Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) in Pune. There, he underwent reconstructive plastic surgery on Thursday and is currently under close observation in the pediatric intensive care unit. Doctors are administering antibiotics, fluids, and the full anti-rabies vaccination schedule.
The attack has ignited anger among local residents, who have reportedly made numerous complaints about stray dogs to the Junnar Municipal Council. Officials have responded by stating that 324 stray dogs were recently sterilized and that a new tender process is in motion to resume the capture and sterilization drive.
