18 Jan
Summary
- Residents near Narrabeen Lagoon evacuated as storms flood homes.
- Over a dozen people rescued across Sydney amid submerged cars.
- A woman tragically died after a tree branch fell on her car.

Summer storms are currently battering Australia's east coast, leading to emergency evacuations and widespread disruption. Residents in Sydney's northern beaches, specifically near Narrabeen Lagoon, were instructed to leave their homes on Sunday morning due to significant flooding. The severe weather has resulted in over a dozen rescues across the city, with numerous cars submerged and homes inundated.
Tragically, the storm system claimed a life on Saturday afternoon when a tree branch fell onto a woman's car on Macquarie Pass, south of Wollongong. State Emergency Service crews have been inundated with requests for help, responding to more than 800 calls across New South Wales. Additional heavy rainfall was anticipated for Sunday morning.
Beyond Sydney, Queensland also experienced wild weather, with thunderstorms affecting the south-east, causing power outages and damaging homes. Meanwhile, Victoria and Adelaide are expected to have sunny and hot conditions, contrasting with predicted storms in Darwin.
