A fire has caused severe damage to a badminton hall originally constructed for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The roof of the venue, which had reportedly been unused for several years, collapsed as a result of the blaze. Approximately 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, bringing the fire under control by early Monday morning.
No injuries were reported in the incident. This complex, built as a temporary structure for the Olympics, incurred costs exceeding 20 million euros. Following the games, it was leased as a private concert venue for an additional 16 million euros. However, a court ruling in 2012 deemed the venue non-compliant with building regulations and ordered its demolition. The venue's 20-year lease had expired in April.
