The flood situation in Assam escalated critically on Monday, with five fatalities and two individuals reported missing since mid-June.
A devastating flash flood, triggered by a cloudburst in neighboring Nagaland on Sunday, swept through districts along the interstate border, impacting over three lakh people in 794 villages across 16 districts. Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat are among the worst-hit areas.
The floods disrupted rail services and inundated critical infrastructure like tea estates and factories. A pregnant tea garden worker gave birth inside flooded premises in Sivasagar district due to inaccessibility to medical facilities.
Rescue operations are in full swing, with the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local administration deployed. Authorities have established 101 relief camps and 52 distribution centers, accommodating over 9,600 displaced individuals.
Urban flooding also affected over 7,700 people, primarily in Kamrup (Metro). Rail connectivity faced severe disruption as tracks were submerged and damaged, leading to the halting of several trains and the evacuation of over 2,000 passengers.
