30 Sep
Summary
- Three premature newborns died in the fire at Amravati District Women's Hospital.
- CCTV footage shows alarms sounding before staff reacted to the blaze.
- An inquiry revealed non-functional fire alarms and sprinkler systems.

A devastating fire at the Amravati District Women's Hospital on August 24 resulted in the tragic deaths of three premature newborns. The blaze, which occurred in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), also necessitated the rescue and transfer of 36 other infants to different medical facilities.
Emerging CCTV footage from the incident has cast serious doubt on the hospital's safety measures and the timeliness of its emergency response. The footage appears to show fire alarms sounding and warning lights flashing within the ward before any visible staff reaction.
Subsequent investigations into the fire-safety preparedness of the state-run hospital revealed significant deficiencies. Key safety systems, including the fire alarm and sprinkler systems, were found to be non-functional. Furthermore, the fire pump house was reportedly locked when the emergency began, hindering immediate containment efforts.
In response to these findings, five hospital officials have been suspended, and action is being pursued against two companies implicated in the alleged lapses concerning fire-safety equipment. The National Human Rights Commission has also taken cognizance of the matter, requesting a detailed report from the Maharashtra chief secretary. An 11-member committee has submitted its report on the fire to the state government, though it remains undisclosed.
