On Monday, August 25, 2026, at approximately 3:30 AM, a fire broke out at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the District Women's Hospital in Amravati. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of three infants due to suffocation. The hospital's SNCU, which houses three wings, had nine infants in the affected wing where the fire originated. A total of 30 infants were receiving treatment in the other two wings at the time.
Dedicated on-duty staff, including nurses Lalita Kasdekar, Madhuri Dhumale, Akash Chavan, Jayashri Dhurve, and Rita Dale, acted swiftly. They raised the alarm and initiated the rescue of infants from the immediate wing. Dr. Hisham Inamdar became unconscious after re-entering the ward to save more babies, while Dr. Minal Awaghad assisted in the ongoing rescue efforts. Their bravery ensured that 36 infants were successfully evacuated from the dangerous situation.
