27 Aug
Summary
- 12 people died and dozens were injured in northeastern Algeria on Wednesday.
- Fires raged in provinces of Jijel, Bejaia, and Tizi Ouzou.
- Evacuations ordered as 69 blazes, fueled by strong winds, continue.

Tragic forest fires have claimed the lives of 12 people and left numerous others injured across northeastern Algeria. The devastating blazes occurred on Wednesday, impacting provinces such as Jijel, Bejaia, and Tizi Ouzou. In Bejaia province alone, several individuals, including a young boy and a woman, were among the fatalities.
As firefighting operations intensified, 69 separate fires were actively being combated by Wednesday evening. These fires, fueled by strong winds, led to the evacuation of many residents from affected areas in Bejaia and Jijel. Authorities reported that 54 individuals were receiving treatment for burns, with six in serious condition.
The fires have caused significant disruption, leading to the closure of three major national highways. This recurring issue during Algeria's summers is exacerbated by climate change, leading to more frequent droughts and intense heatwaves. Last year, similar fires in July claimed over 30 lives.
