Teen Rescued After Days Adrift on Overturned Boat

A remarkable rescue operation concluded on Monday afternoon with the saving of a 15-year-old boy who had been clinging to an overturned fishing boat for several days. The vessel was located approximately four miles east of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. Tragically, two other individuals were found unresponsive in the water and were later recovered.
The boat had departed Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island on Friday, with an expected return on Sunday morning. When it failed to arrive, a search was initiated. However, challenging weather conditions and poor visibility delayed the Coast Guard's active search until Monday morning.
An HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak spotted the survivor and deployed a raft and survival gear. A good Samaritan vessel, the Northwest Explorer, guided by flares from the aircraft, reached the overturned skiff and brought the teenager aboard. This vessel also recovered the two deceased boaters.
The survivor, who exhibited symptoms of hypothermia, was transported along with the remains of the other two individuals to Nome. Reports suggest the deceased were the teenager's brother and cousin. The multi-agency rescue effort involved significant coordination between various Coast Guard units, the Alaska Air National Guard, State Troopers, and local authorities.
