Alaska Hiker Attacked by Brown Bear

A woman was attacked by a brown bear on Saturday while hiking with a friend and three dogs near south Anchorage, adjacent to Chugach State Park. The incident occurred on an unofficial, overgrown trail, increasing the risk of surprising wildlife.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials stated the bear emerged from dense vegetation and made brief contact before leaving the scene. One of the victim's dogs, which was off-leash, became separated but was later found uninjured and returned home.

Wildlife officials indicated that bears often cache and defend food sources, especially this time of year. Reports of a recent moose kill in the vicinity suggest a potential food source. High winds and poor weather may have also contributed to the bear being surprised by the hikers.

First responders, including the Anchorage Fire Department and Alaska Wildlife Troopers, were dispatched. The injured woman was carried down the trail and transported to a local hospital. Drones were used to monitor the bear's movements throughout the rescue operation.
