Airlines Warn: Grab Bags, Face Fines!
9 Jun
Summary
- Airlines may fine passengers who delay evacuations by taking luggage.
- Iata's campaign educates passengers on leaving belongings behind.
- Incidents in Moscow and Singapore highlight dangers of taking bags.

Airlines are contemplating significant penalties, potentially including fines, for passengers who obstruct emergency evacuations by attempting to retrieve their luggage. This potential action stems from a concerning increase in incidents where passengers delay evacuations to collect their belongings.
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has initiated a 'save a life, not a bag' campaign aimed at educating passengers about the critical necessity of leaving all items behind during an evacuation. This is crucial as taking bags can block aisles, puncture evacuation slides, and injure others, severely compromising safety protocols.
Past events serve as stark warnings: in 2019, an Aeroflot jet fire in Moscow saw passengers grabbing luggage, contributing to 41 fatalities. More recently, in 2023, passengers escaping a blazing Air China plane in Singapore largely retained their belongings, causing dangerous pile-ups.
Nick Careen, head of operations, safety, and security at Iata, stated that while education is the initial approach, a more 'draconian' response, including fines, might be necessary if passenger behavior does not change. He noted that situations with visible peril, like the 2024 Haneda airport incident where a plane caught fire, often see passengers evacuating more rapidly, demonstrating that perceived immediate danger influences behavior.
