Summary
- An earthquake in Afghanistan claimed the lives of eight family members.
- A two-year-old child was the sole survivor, sustaining injuries.
- The 5.8-magnitude quake's epicenter was in northeastern Badakhshan province.

A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of eight family members in Kabul province when their home tragically collapsed. Health Ministry officials confirmed that a child around two years old was the sole survivor and sustained injuries from the disaster.
The earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.8 and occurred at a depth of 186 kilometers. Its epicenter was located in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan, an area known for seismic activity due to its proximity to tectonic plate junctions.
Tremors from the quake were widely felt across Afghanistan, including in the capital, Kabul. The seismic event also extended its reach to neighboring countries, with strong tremors reported in New Delhi, India, and various cities in Pakistan, including Islamabad and Peshawar.
Despite the significant impact in Kabul province, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage closer to the epicenter in Badakhshan. Information relay from remote provinces can often be delayed, leaving the full extent of localized impact uncertain for several hours.
Afghanistan is highly susceptible to earthquakes due to its location along the Hindu Kush mountain range. On average, the country experiences 560 earthquake-related fatalities annually. This incident follows a devastating magnitude 6 earthquake last August that resulted in at least 2,200 deaths.
