Elizabeth L. Hillman, President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, noted that many younger visitors are unfamiliar with how the tragedy reshaped lives. The exhibition features artifacts, interactive elements, and personal testimonies from individuals who became military members, first responders, and volunteers.
A significant artifact is a papier-mâché sculpture created by children who lost loved ones on 9/11. Hillman explained its importance, symbolizing how these young people channeled their grief into meaningful action. The museum also offers a digital learning experience with a film featuring personal stories, such as those of brothers James and Patrick Dowdell, whose father died responding to the attacks, inspiring James to become a firefighter and Patrick to join the U.S. Army.
Recognizing that future generations may not remember 9/11, the museum provides age-appropriate educational resources, including recommendations for materials from Sesame Street. Hillman stated the museum's mission is to prepare future teachers, firefighters, police officers, and military personnel by helping them understand the collective response to the catastrophe. The exhibition opens to the public on September 12, 2026.
