Southern Santa Clara County experienced an early morning jolt on Wednesday as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck. The seismic event, reported by the U.S. Geological Survey, occurred at 6:16 a.m. with its epicenter located approximately five miles east of Gilroy. This initial tremor was not isolated, as it was followed closely by two distinct aftershocks.
Just minutes after the primary quake, a magnitude 2.7 aftershock occurred at 6:18 a.m., followed by a 3.6 magnitude aftershock at 6:20 a.m. Reports from USGS website visitors indicated that the shaking was felt as far north as Marin County and extended south to the Monterey Bay area. Residents in southern Santa Clara County and San Benito County experienced light to moderate shaking.
As of Wednesday morning, officials have not received any immediate reports detailing damage to infrastructure or injuries to residents resulting from the earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks. Emergency services are monitoring the situation following the seismic activity.
