Bengaluru Tragedy: Men Die Cleaning Unused Water Sump
1 Mar
Summary
- Three men died from suffocation while cleaning an unused water sump.
- The victims included the homeowner, a plumber, and a food-delivery agent.
- Toxic fumes are suspected as the cause of the deaths inside the sump.

A routine water sump cleaning in Bengaluru's Whitefield area turned fatal Saturday evening, claiming the lives of three men. The incident unfolded when homeowner Muniswamappa, 67, entered an unused sump with plumber Rudra Kumar, 40, reportedly to clean it using chemical agents.
Concerns arose when neither responded to calls, prompting neighbor Vishwanath Achari, 27, a food-delivery agent, to enter the sump to check on them. Tragically, Achari also failed to emerge or respond.
Alerted residents called the police. A Hoysala patrol officer, equipped with an oxygen mask, entered the sump and found all three men unresponsive. They were pulled out and rushed to a hospital, but were pronounced dead. Preliminary investigations point to suffocation due to toxic fumes as the likely cause of this devastating incident.
