Two women and a 9-year-old boy have been rescued after a three-day ordeal following a river tubing trip gone wrong. The group became stranded on the Muskegon River in Twin Lake, Michigan, when their tubes were damaged by log jams. They were found by Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers approximately 7 miles downstream from their entry point.
The trio had been navigating dense, shoulder-high brush, switchgrass, and stinging nettles. Facing dehydration and exhaustion, they survived by eating bark and flowers, and drinking river water. Their physical condition upon discovery included numerous deep cuts and bug bites from the rugged environment.
Rescuers located the group by tracking footprints and broken vegetation. The rescue involved carrying the women out on stretchers and a trooper carrying the young boy on his back. They were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment. The boy, despite his ordeal, was reportedly in good spirits, eager for familiar foods.
