A tragic rail accident unfolded in Spain's southern Andalusia region on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of 21 people and injuring over 73. The disaster occurred near Adamuz when a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed, crossing into the path of an oncoming train. Both services derailed, causing widespread devastation.
Emergency responders described the scene as horrific, with twisted metal and carriages that had fallen down a four-meter embankment complicating rescue efforts. Firefighters reported having to move deceased individuals to reach survivors trapped within the wreckage. The train operator, Iryo, stated approximately 300 people were aboard the Malaga-Madrid service at the time of the incident.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep sorrow, calling it a "night of deep pain." High-speed rail operations between Madrid and several Andalusian cities, including Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, and Huelva, were suspended for at least Monday. A similar devastating high-speed train derailment occurred in 2013 near Santiago de Compostela, which killed 80 people.
