Tragedy struck near Thiruporur on Saturday when two college students lost their lives while bathing in Kondangi lake. The students, identified as Viswanath, aged 20, from Madurai, and Bharath Kumar, also 20, from Mayiladuthurai, were part of a group of approximately 10 college-goers who visited the scenic lake.
While bathing around 2 p.m., the two students ventured into a deeper section of the lake. Unfortunately, they were unable to swim and accidentally slipped into the deep waters, leading to their drowning. Their friends immediately alerted the Thiruporur police and sought assistance from fire and rescue services.
Rescue teams initiated an extensive search operation in the lake and successfully recovered the bodies of Viswanath and Bharath Kumar. The bodies have been sent to the government hospital in Chengalpet for postmortem examination. Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the incident.
Kondangi Lake is known for its scenic beauty, especially during the monsoon when rainwater creates a waterfall-like effect, drawing visitors. However, due to safety concerns, authorities had previously imposed restrictions and deployed personnel to prevent entry. Security measures were later withdrawn after the water flow subsided, a factor that may have contributed to the students' decision to enter the lake.
