A poignant memorial has been established at Walmer station to commemorate four US servicemen who tragically lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion on September 12, 1945. The incident, which occurred in the station's goods shed, claimed the lives of four American soldiers and injured between 12 and 15 others.
Local historian Phil Eyden highlighted the significance of remembering these servicemen, stating that their deaths, though not in direct combat, were in service and far from home. Eyden's research, which involved considerable effort to identify the deceased, eventually led to the installation of a commemorative plaque in 2021.
Eyden recounted accounts suggesting a lit cigarette may have ignited petrol vapor, causing the catastrophic explosion. Firefighters worked for hours to control the blaze and secure other tank wagons. The event left a lasting impression, with witnesses describing flames and dark smoke billowing from the storage tank.
