A 10-year-old boy from Talala, in the Gir Somnath district, passed away on Wednesday at Rajkot Civil Hospital. His death followed nearly four weeks after sustaining critical burns during a practice session for a traditional Dhamal dance performance on August 28.
The Dhamal dance, practiced by the Siddi community of African heritage, often incorporates fire-related acts. During the rehearsal, a flammable liquid from the boy's mouth reportedly spilled onto his attire, igniting and spreading flames rapidly as he ran.
Suffering burns across more than 50% of his body, the child was initially treated in Junagadh before being transferred to Rajkot Civil Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed. Police have registered a report and are conducting further investigations, including a postmortem, to determine any potential criminal negligence.
