Thousands Evacuated as Uncontrolled Canyon Fire Rages in California
8 Aug
Summary
- Hundreds of firefighters battling Canyon Fire since Thursday
- Blaze has spread to over 4,800 acres with 0% containment
- Extreme heat and strong winds fueling rapid fire growth

On August 9th, 2025, a fast-growing brush fire in the mountainous areas north of Los Angeles has forced thousands of people to evacuate as firefighters struggle to bring the situation under control. The Canyon Fire, which ignited on Thursday afternoon in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, has already spread to over 4,856 acres, with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reporting zero percent containment as of Friday afternoon.
Hundreds of firefighters have been battling the blaze overnight, taking advantage of cooler temperatures to make progress. However, the extreme heat and low humidity in the region, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, combined with strong winds, have created dangerous conditions that have allowed the flames to spread rapidly.
LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger has urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate without hesitation, warning that the conditions are ripe for the fire to spread at an alarming speed. The fire is burning just south of Lake Piru, a reservoir located in the Los Padres National Forest, and is close to Lake Castaic, a popular recreation area that was previously affected by the Hughes Fire in January.
