Rains Douse Saskatchewan Wildfires After Intense Season
14 Aug
Summary
- Three major wildfires now contained
- Widespread rain reduces risk to communities
- Worst wildfire season on record for Saskatchewan
As of August 14th, 2025, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has announced that three of the largest wildfires in the province this year have been contained. The Ditch, Shoe, and Wolf fires, which had forced the evacuation of 38 communities at one point, are now under control.
The containment of these blazes comes after widespread precipitation in the last few days, with five to 20 millimetres of rain falling across the affected areas. This has significantly improved the ability of firefighters to gain the upper hand on the situation and reduced the risk to local communities and infrastructure.
However, the 2025 wildfire season in Saskatchewan has been one of the worst on record, with the most loss of homes and other structures ever seen in the province. Over 1,100 people remain displaced from their homes, and some communities, including the Northern Village of Pinehouse and La Plonge Reserve, are still under evacuation orders.
The SPSA has been supported by resources from across Canada and even internationally, with air tankers and helicopters from Quebec and firefighting crews from Australia. The agency has also extended the stay of 300 Canadian Armed Forces members who have been providing critical assistance.
While the situation has improved, the SPSA cautions that local fire bans may still be in place, and residents are advised to check for updates before engaging in any outdoor activities that could spark new blazes.
