On 18 March 2025, tragedy struck in central London when a 22-year-old student was killed in a shocking collision. Aalia Mahomed, a second-year physics and philosophy student at King's College London (KCL), was sitting on a bench in a pedestrianized area on The Strand when a van drove through closed gates and struck her.
Mahomed was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were also injured in the incident. Her brother, Zain, described her as "amazing" - smart, loving, and funny. Earlier that day, Mahomed had been honoured at a graduation ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall on London's South Bank.
In the aftermath, about 40 friends, family members, and people from KCL gathered to pay tribute to the young student. The Metropolitan Police have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and he remains on bail.
