On August 22nd, 2025, a wildfire in Napa County, California has grown to over 1,100 acres, forcing the evacuation of residents in the city of Calistoga. The Pickett fire, which started the previous afternoon, is spreading at a moderate pace, according to the state's fire agency, Cal Fire.
Evacuation orders have been issued for three zones in Calistoga, covering 72 residents, while another 187 people are under evacuation warnings in three other zones. The evacuated residents are currently sheltering at the Calistoga Community Center.
California is facing one of its worst wildfire seasons this year, fueled by record-breaking summer temperatures and compounded by cuts to federal agencies that assist with firefighting, prevention, and recovery efforts. This includes reductions in funding for the National Weather Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Calistoga, a city of around 5,200 people, is home to a dozen vineyards that are part of the renowned Napa Valley wine industry. Winds are currently blowing the fire northeast, away from the city and neighboring towns, but the situation remains fluid.
