On the night of August 16, 2025, a deadly mudslide struck a slum in Vikhroli, Mumbai, burying a family as they slept. The tragedy unfolded as the city was battered by heavy rains, with Vikhroli recording 257.5mm of rainfall overnight.
The victims were Suresh, 50, and his 19-year-old daughter Shalu. They were the sole breadwinners for the family, with Suresh working as a daily wage laborer. Neighbors heard a loud thud around 2:30 am and rushed to find one of the slum homes buried under mud. Despite their efforts, they were unable to save Suresh and Shalu.
Two other family members, Arti Mishra, 45, and her son Ruturaj, 20, were rescued alive but suffered injuries. They were taken to the hospital but discharged themselves to perform the last rites of Suresh and Shalu.
The mudslide occurred when a retaining wall, apparently built by a private builder, gave way in the heavy downpour. Local authorities have now cordoned off the area and asked residents to vacate, at least until the monsoon season ends. They plan to demolish several homes in the landslide-prone region to prevent further loss of life.
For the survivors, the tragedy has left them struggling to make ends meet. With Suresh gone, the family must now find a way to earn a living or return to their native place, as they cannot afford to rebuild their home.
