As the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, a Manx firefighter is set to embark on a grueling fitness challenge to honor the memory of those who lost their lives that fateful day. On September 11th, 2025, Adam Boyd will attempt to complete 2,977 burpees - one for each victim - outside the Douglas Fire Station during his nine-hour shift.
Boyd, who was only nine years old at the time of the attacks, says he feels a "deep connection" to the 343 firefighters, paramedics, and first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save others. The burpee challenge, in which someone squats, places their hands on the floor, and jumps back into a push-up position, will be a "tribute to the courage and sacrifice shown by so many" on that fateful day.
Despite acknowledging that the challenge will be "really tough," Boyd is determined to see it through, stating that he will "just keep remembering what I'm doing it for." The bravery of the first responders who rushed to the scene continues to inspire him, and he emphasizes that this is not about him, but rather about honoring the memory of those who were lost.
