31 Jul
Summary
- Powerful 6.1 magnitude aftershock hits Kamchatka, Russia
- Epicenter located 239 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
- Follows massive 8.7 quake that struck the region last month

On the early morning of August 1, 2025, a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. The aftershock, which occurred around 2:35 AM local time, was centered in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 24 kilometers, approximately 239 kilometers away from the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
This latest tremor follows a massive 8.7 magnitude quake that hit the Kamchatka region just last month, on July 30th. Authorities declared a state of high alert in the aftermath of the initial quake, which also triggered a tsunami warning across the Pacific.
According to the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the region has been experiencing a series of aftershocks ranging from magnitudes 4 to 5.9 over the past several hours, with the frequency gradually declining. In the first 24 hours after the initial 8.7 quake, aftershocks were recorded as frequently as every 5 to 10 minutes.
