30 Aug
Summary
- Incessant rain caused landslides, closing National Highway 10 in north Bengal
- No casualties reported, but transport between hill towns severely affected
- Restoration work underway, roads expected to reopen soon

On August 29, 2025, incessant rainfall in the hills of north Bengal caused landslides in the region, leading to the closure of National Highway 10, a vital arterial route connecting Sikkim and West Bengal. The landslides have severely affected the lives of daily commuters who rely on this highway to travel between multiple hill towns in the area.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for the Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts of north Bengal on the day of the incident. While rains have reduced in the area, a yellow alert remains in place for the two districts.
According to a senior official of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), no casualties were reported from the landslide area, and no one was injured. The National Highway authorities are currently conducting restoration work, and the roads are expected to reopen soon.
The monsoon season in eastern India has been particularly active this year, with north Bengal witnessing multiple landslides and road blockages since the beginning of the season. The Teesta river has also risen above the danger mark several times, overflowing into localities along the NH10.
