In response to the crisis, Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp has declared a local state of emergency due to the flash flooding. The Chattanooga Fire Department and Hamilton County Sheriff's Office have been working tirelessly to rescue stranded motorists and residents trapped in their homes. Six people were saved after a van was nearly swept away in a nearby overflowing creek.
As the waters begin to recede, the region remains on high alert, with 6 million people under a Flood Watch across much of Tennessee and eastern Kentucky. Authorities warn that additional heavy rainfall could lead to further flash flooding in the coming hours and days.
