Nearly 24 years after the devastating 9/11 attacks, the NYC medical examiner's office has made a remarkable breakthrough in identifying three more victims. In a statement released on August 7, 2025, the office confirmed that the remains of Barbara Keating and Ryan Fitzgerald have been positively identified through DNA testing.
The third victim, an adult woman, has also been identified, but her name is being withheld at the request of her family. This latest development is a testament to the city's sustained efforts to bring closure to the families of those who perished on that fateful day.
Paul Keating, the son of Barbara Keating, expressed his gratitude for the medical examiner's work, saying, "They're doing this for us. They're doing it like they're possessed." The mayor's office also acknowledged the ongoing pain felt by the families, stating that "the pain of losing a loved one in the September 11th terror attacks echoes across the decades."
With these three new identifications, the total number of victims identified now stands at 1,653 out of the 2,753 people who died in New York City on September 11, 2001. The medical examiner's office has vowed to continue this painstaking work, honoring the memory of the lost and providing solace to their loved ones.
