Supreme Court Orders Probe into 'Ghost Litigant' Controversy
5 Aug
Summary
- Mystery surrounds 'ghost litigant' in Supreme Court case
- Lawyers deny involvement, court orders Bar Council inquiry
- Alleged fake compromise led to quashed orders against litigant

In a puzzling turn of events, the Supreme Court of India has ordered an inquiry into the case of a 'ghost litigant' that has been haunting the court's proceedings. The controversy first came to light around five months ago when a litigant managed to secure a favorable order from the Supreme Court after a 'ghost' opponent appeared in the court proceedings and claimed that a compromise had been reached in a land dispute case.
However, the real opponent later surfaced and informed the court that he had neither compromised with the petitioner nor engaged any lawyer to represent him before the Supreme Court. Both parties are now pointing fingers at each other, accusing the other of playing with the court. Interestingly, both parties have also pressed for a police investigation into the matter.
The Supreme Court has already recalled its earlier order that was based on the alleged fake compromise. The court has now granted eight weeks to the Bar Council of India to conduct an inquiry into the role of the lawyers involved in the case. The court has also indicated that it may consider a police investigation after receiving the Bar Council's report, if it is found that an outsider was involved in the controversy.
