Shooting Scare Rocks Times Square, 3 Wounded

Last month, on July 9th, 2025, a shooting incident occurred in New York City's iconic Times Square, leaving 3 people wounded. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that one person was taken into custody and questioned over the shooting, though no charges have been pressed so far.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed people running away from the scene as police surrounded a vehicle and attended to the injured lying on the ground. Several victims were hospitalized, but their injuries were not life-threatening, according to the authorities.

The shooting took place around 1:20 a.m., but details on how the incident unfolded have not been released yet. Despite this scare, New York City has seen a remarkable drop in gun violence this year. Through August 3rd, 2025, the city has recorded its fewest shootings in decades, down 23% compared to the same period last year.

New York state has strict gun laws, banning firearms from certain "sensitive locations" like public transportation, hospitals, schools, and Times Square. The U.S. Supreme Court also declined to take up a challenge to the state's gun regulations in April.
