On March 11, 2024, Devione Leeante Malone, a 26-year-old St. Paul man with a history of violence against law enforcement, engaged in a standoff with Oakdale police officers. Malone pleaded guilty on August 4, 2025, to first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer and other charges related to the incident.
According to the criminal complaint, Oakdale police responded to a 911 call reporting that Malone was threatening a woman with a gun. Malone was prohibited from having contact with the woman due to a domestic abuse no-contact order. When officers attempted to surround Malone's car, he sped off and evaded them before turning into the woman's driveway. Malone then got out of the car and fired a shot at an officer, who returned fire. Malone then ran into the home and fired three more shots at the officers from a window.
After a several-hour standoff, the Washington County SWAT team took Malone into custody. Malone admitted that the handgun used in the incident was his and that he always carried it with him. He said he assumed he was going to jail on the no-contact order violation and did not remember shooting at the officers.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Malone was also charged with four counts of first-degree assault for using deadly force against the peace officers and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. As part of a plea deal, two other felony cases against Malone will be dismissed at his sentencing, which is scheduled for November 7, 2025.
