Pregnant Wife's Suicide Attempt Exposes Dowry Harassment, Marital Disputes

On August 5, 2025, a 19-year-old pregnant woman attempted suicide at her parent's home in Nallagutta, Hyderabad, due to alleged dowry harassment and marital disputes with her 22-year-old unemployed husband, Bheem Raj. The couple had married about three months ago without informing their families.
According to the victim's statement to the police, the troubles began when Raj, who was unemployed, refused to look for work and, along with his parents and siblings, demanded dowry from the victim's family. Raj also started consuming alcohol daily and assaulting the victim in an intoxicated state. He also accused her of immoral conduct and became suspicious about her character whenever she spoke to his visiting friends.
The situation escalated on August 5 when Raj posted the victim's private photographs on Instagram and insulted her over the phone, questioning the paternity of her pregnancy. Distressed, the 19-year-old attempted suicide by consuming phenol and slashing her wrist at her parent's home. She is currently recuperating at Gandhi Hospital.
The Ramgopalpet police have registered a criminal case against Raj and his family members under Section 85 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4 of the Dowry (Prohibition) Act. Raj is currently absconding, and the police will record the victim's detailed statement once she is discharged from the hospital.
