As of August 4th, 2025, the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, convicted of murdering a Yemeni citizen in 2017, continues to generate controversy. Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar's office has expressed hope that Priya's sentence will be commuted, but the Central government has clarified that there is no official confirmation on the matter.
Meanwhile, the brother of Talal Abdu Mahdi, the Yemeni national allegedly murdered by Priya, has written to the prosecution seeking a new date for the execution, which was previously postponed. The letter reportedly rejects all mediation and negotiation attempts, stating that it has been a month and a half since the execution was postponed.
The ongoing campaign asserting that Priya's death sentence has been overturned has also drawn criticism from evangelist leader Dr. K A Paul, who has demanded that Kanthapuram issue an apology for making such claims.

Priya was convicted in 2017 for the alleged murder of Talal Abdu Mahdi, whom she claimed had confiscated her passport and subjected her to repeated physical abuse. According to Priya, the incident occurred after she administered a lethal overdose of medication to Mahdi.
Despite the conflicting claims, Priya's mother, Premakumari, has stated that she is unwilling to return to India without her daughter and that her continued stay in Yemen is voluntary, driven by her commitment to stand by Priya during this critical legal battle.
