Madras High Court Criticizes Tirupur Police for Incomplete Suicide Probe
1 Aug
Summary
- Madras High Court unsatisfied with police's incomplete postmortem report
- Court directs police to submit comprehensive report on Rithanya's suicide case
- Allegations of dowry harassment against Rithanya's husband and in-laws

On August 1, 2025, the Madras High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the Tirupur police's handling of the suicide case of Rithanya, who had complained of dowry harassment. Justice M Nirmal Kumar noted that the police's postmortem report lacked crucial details regarding possible physical abuse suffered by the victim.
The court directed the police to submit a comprehensive report, ensuring all relevant aspects of the case were properly documented and investigated. The judge observed that it has become an attitude for investigating agencies to collect materials mechanically without actually using manpower to investigate a case.
The court's observations came during the hearing of bail applications moved by Rithanya's husband and in-laws, who were arrested based on voice recordings she had sent to her father before dying by suicide. The police had filed a case under Section 194(3) (suicide by a woman within 7 years of marriage) of the Indian Penal Code.
