Summary
- Kancheepuram DSP ordered to judicial custody for failing to act on Scheduled Caste assault case
- DSP resisted arrest, sprinted towards another vehicle before being taken to sub-jail
- Judge says DSP and SP wilfully neglected duties under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act

On September 6, 2025, the Principal District and Sessions Judge in Kancheepuram ordered the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), M. Sankar Ganesh, to be remanded in judicial custody for his alleged failure to take action in a case booked under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The case relates to the assault on a Scheduled Caste man, Murugan, by a bakery owner, Sivakumar, on July 25, 2025. Murugan had complained that a cake he purchased was stale, leading to a quarrel. However, the Station House Officer (SHO) at the Walajabad police station failed to register an FIR as required under the Act.
The judge held that the DSP, who was appointed as the investigating officer, also did not comply with the statutory mandates of the Act. He had neither arrested the accused nor served copies of the order on them. Furthermore, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kancheepuram district had also failed to review the case and monitor its progress.
Passing the order, the judge said the DSP and the SP had "wilfully neglected" their duties under the Act. When the DSP appeared in court on September 6, he did not file the status report as ordered, leading the judge to remand him in judicial custody until September 22, 2025.
