25 Aug
Summary
- Police department takes precautions for Ganesha festival
- Implements 'safety island' concept to protect women, children, and elderly
- Parades drug peddlers and consumers, deports 19 peddlers

In the lead-up to the Ganesha festival, the Hubballi police department has been taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth and secure celebration. As part of their precautionary measures, the department has implemented the 'safety island' concept for the first time. This involves setting up small, tent-like offices at designated points along the procession routes, staffed by police officers, medical personnel, and home guards. The aim is to provide timely medical attention and assistance to the large crowds, including women, children, and the elderly, who are expected to participate in the festivities.
Additionally, the police have been cracking down on potential troublemakers. They have conducted parades of rowdy-sheeters and drug peddlers, and have deported more than 100 rowdy-sheeters from the city. On Monday, the department also paraded drug peddlers and consumers, and deported around 19 drug peddlers. The police commissioner, N Shashi Kumar, stated that their main intention is to restrict drug consumers from attending the processions and events, as there is a risk of them causing disturbances under the influence of drugs.
The Ganesha festival and Eid Milad will be celebrated concurrently this year, and the police have taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of both communities during the festivities.
