High Court Explores Expansion Plan Amid Land Constraints
6 Aug
Summary
- High court unable to relocate to Sarangpur or IT Park area
- Considering holistic plan to extend existing building
- UT administration and bar association to discuss plan

On August 6, 2025, the Punjab and Haryana High Court is actively exploring a holistic plan to expand its existing building in Chandigarh. This development comes after the court found no feasibility in relocating the current building to Sarangpur village or the IT Park area, and the UT administration's inability to provide land in the IT Park.
The high court has now directed the UT administration and the high court bar association to hold a joint meeting on Thursday evening to deliberate on taking the holistic plan forward. The meeting will be presided over by Satya Pal Jain, the additional solicitor general of the Government of India.
The court has asked the UT administration to share all relevant documents, including sketches and maps, with the bar association to facilitate a fruitful discussion. The parties will also discuss the issue of alternate sites for the court's expansion.
Additionally, the high court has directed the UT administration to file an affidavit responding to whether the holistic development plan would be approved by the administration and the Heritage Committee, provided the requirement for courtrooms is reduced. This is significant as the court had previously proposed 140 courtrooms.
The court has also sought more information from the administration regarding any restrictions or environmental objections that may impact the holistic plan's approval.
