On August 24, 2025, a tragic incident occurred on Main Street in Crossville, Tennessee, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old former mechanic. The deceased is identified as Albert Darrell (Al) Sturgill Jr., a resident of Crossville.
The man charged with attempted second-degree murder is Eric B. Garrison, 42, from the Lake Tansi area. Authorities have stated that they expect the charge to be amended or upgraded in the coming days.
The incident unfolded around 4:45 pm on Saturday, when Crossville Police responded to reports of a physical altercation that had spilled into the busy street. Main Street was crowded with motorists heading to the county fair, local restaurants, and other venues when the confrontation took place.
According to the arrest affidavit, video footage shows Garrison being struck in the head with a stick held by the older Sturgill. Two other men were attempting to separate the two individuals. Garrison then ran to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and fired a shot that struck Sturgill, who was gravely injured. Sturgill was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has joined the Crossville Police Department in the ongoing investigation, and Cumberland County Sheriff's Office deputies assisted at the scene. Detectives and agents are currently meeting with the District Attorney's office and interviewing witnesses to gather more information.
